Air travel security rules in Canada are overseen by the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA), the federal agency responsible for screening passengers and baggage at designated airports across the country. Staying informed about the rules can save you time and hassle at the airport.
Acceptable Identification for Domestic Flights
For flights within Canada, you must present one piece of valid government-issued photo identification. Acceptable forms include a Canadian passport, provincial or territorial driver's licence, NEXUS card, Permanent Resident card, Canadian citizenship card with photo, or a Canadian Armed Forces ID card. Unlike the United States, Canada does not have an equivalent to the REAL ID program—your standard provincial driver's licence is accepted for domestic travel.
Liquids, Aerosols, and Gels
CATSA follows international standards for carry-on liquids. Containers must be 100 mL or less and all containers must fit within a single clear, resealable plastic bag no larger than 1 litre. Exceptions are made for baby food and formula, prescription medication, and essential non-prescription medication. These items should be declared to the screening officer.
Electronics Screening
Laptops and large electronic devices must be removed from your bag and placed in a separate bin for X-ray screening. Tablets and smartphones can typically remain in your bag.
Restricted and Prohibited Items
CATSA maintains a detailed list of items that are prohibited in carry-on luggage. Sharp objects, sporting equipment, tools, and self-defence items must go in checked baggage. Cannabis is legal to fly with domestically in quantities up to 30 grams, but it cannot be taken on international flights.
NEXUS and Trusted Traveller Programs
Canada participates in the NEXUS trusted traveller program (jointly with the United States) which provides expedited border and airport screening for pre-approved, low-risk travellers. NEXUS members can use dedicated security lanes at participating airports.
